Years of experience as local Iceland elopement photographers condensed into best advice for your special day

After helping numerous couples plan their dream elopements in Iceland, a few truths have become crystal clear. No matter your vibe – hiking boots and vows on top of a mountain, or cozy road trip with hot drinks and bad gravel roads – these are the tips we find ourselves sharing with our clients again and again.
They’re not fancy. They’re not trendy. But they work – and they’ll help make your elopement smoother, more relaxed, and so much more fun.

Don’t overplan. Leave space for the unexpected

We get it, you’re in Iceland for the first time, and the temptation to cram as many cool things in your elopement day as possible is real. But Iceland rewards spontaneity. Some of the best moments happen when you don’t rush off to the next thing.
We’ve had couples pause for an unexpected rainbow, a herd of curious sheep, or a quiet moment beside a hidden waterfall they spotted from the road. Build in breathing room. Let the landscape guide you a little. You’ll be so glad you did.

Dress for the weather (seriously)

Icelandic weather is unpredictable. Like… truly chaotic neutral. So we can’t stress this enough: layers are your best friend. Bring a cozy sweater, thermal tights, waterproof boots, and a warm jacket – yes, even in summer!
We always remind our couples that you can look epic and stay warm. Some amazing images will happen with a shawl blowing in the wind or a jacket casually thrown over a wedding outfit, trust me on this. It’s not about suffering for the shot but rather about embracing the elements while feeling like yourself and staying comfy, which in turn will allow you to focus on the things that matter: your partner, the landscape and the experience.

Always plan for a backup day (especially Sept–May)

This is the hill we will die on. If you’re eloping in Iceland, even during summer, there’s always a chance the weather will throw a tantrum. It can snow in June. The temperature can drop unexpectedly any time of the year. The wind gusts can reach 35 m/s (78 mph) regardless of the season. The rain can last non-stop for hours on end and umbrellas in Iceland are useless most of the time due to the aforementioned winds.
That’s why we include a backup weather day in every single one of our elopement packages – it takes off the pressure, and gives you a much better chance of having a day that feels calm and comfortable. Have a plan B (and C during winter) in place, I promise you won’t regret it.

Legal isn’t always the easiest route

You can get legally married in Iceland – and we’ll happily guide you through it if that’s the plan, but many couples choose a symbolic ceremony instead. Aside from avoiding all the bureaucratic hoops to jump through, it gives you total freedom with timing, location, and vibe. No paperwork = no stress, just the two of you, doing your thing. Symbolic ceremonies also mean you don’t need an officiant, which gives you lots of flexibility with changing plans last minute. And most importantly, you can have a legal ceremony at home, either before or after your elopement here, and actually include family and friends in your celebration – win win!

Trust your photographer

I don’t mean to sound too dramatic, but choosing your elopement photographer is the most important decision you will make while conjuring your Iceland adventure. A good elopement photographer will guide the day in a way that feels natural, intuitive, and true to you. We scout locations, track weather patterns, adjust timelines, keep in touch with the vendors and know where to go when the tour buses show up. Our job isn’t just to take pretty photos, it’s to help you feel present and calm, to notice the little things, to document what really matters.
Trusting your photographer means you can stop worrying about logistics, angles, or timelines, and just focus on each other – that’s where the real magic happens!

Choose the experience that fits you

This one is obvious, and yet a lot of couples seem to forget it when planning their special day. The whole essence of eloping is about doing things your way, so make sure your day reflects that. If you’re not a hiker, don’t feel like you need to climb a mountain. If you want to take it slow and stop for snacks, don’t rush and adventure at your own pace. If you’re craving some adrenaline pumping activity, make sure to include one, and don’t listen to someone telling you that it’s not possible to ice climb in a wedding dress!
You really don’t need to chase a trend. Instead focus on what makes you and your partner happy and create a day that feels truly yours.

Bonus tip: Don’t worry if things don’t go according to plan

I keep saying this: Iceland is not for the faint of heart. Nor is it for a perfect all-going-according-to-plan elopement. Wind will blow your hair everywhere. Your dress will get dirty. Weather will make you overhaul your timeline and itinerary 9 out of 10 times. But that’s Iceland’s charm and a big part part of the adventure – and honestly, those imperfect moments often become the ones you will remember and cherish the most.
Keep an open mind, allow for some surprises and spontaneity, embrace whatever the weather decides to throw at you – your day doesn’t need to be flawless!
